This degree will shape your visual mind. You’ll learn both the technical and artistic skills required to develop ideas, create layouts and designs to craft advertising that’s remembered and loved.

Art directors create the look and feel of advertising campaigns. Together with a copywriter, you research and analyse everything there is to know about a particular product and who it could appeal to, before conceptualising and crafting a campaign. Much like a director, you determine what visual elements should be used (layout, typography, imagery) and how they should be positioned on a page. When it comes to creating a television commercial, your challenge is to draw up a storyboard which depicts each frame. Together with the director, you ensure the end product is true if not better than your original vision. Your ideas are then communicated across all media, whether digital, electronic, out-of-home media or print. If this degree speaks to you, read on.

Skills learned

Consumer behaviour

What turns people on? How do they make decisions when purchasing products? Understanding consumer behaviour is integral to building brands. If you thoroughly know who your target market is and what drives them, you can create winning campaigns.

Conceptualisation and creativity

The ‘big idea’ – what all creatives search for! It’s what makes your campaign stand out from the rest. And what competitors wish they could have come up with.  Be a trendsetter. Innovate! Create!

Presentation

An ability to present and sell your ideas is essential in any agency. If you lack conviction when showcasing your creative and explaining the strategic thinking behind your idea, it won’t matter how impressive the artwork is – the client won’t invest in the campaign.
